Arabic grass

It is a type of lawn grass preferred for its beauty. It is fine leafed and has a deep green colour. This is the most popular grass for lawns in Kenya because of the features that are described below.

Main features of Arabic grass

  • Small leafed blades
  • Fine textured leaves\
  • Deep green leaves
  • A shiny look
  • It is a creeper meaning that it will cover all gaps
  • Tight growth that smothers weeds

Growth habit of Arabic grass

Arabic grass is a creeper. As such, it grows by sending stolons sideways covering all available gaps. On the stolons, leaves grow on alternate nodes and in opposite directions. The stolons tend to be red-green. Once the gaps are filled, the grass produces numerous shoots. It is these shoots that completely cover the ground. Because of this, Arabic forms a dense mat.

Shade tolerance

Arabic grass has medium shade tolerance. It will therefore grow very well in partial shade such as under tall trees and trees without a heavy canopy. It also grows very well under full sun. Water must be available for a lush green lawn.

Ability to out-compete weeds

The dense mat from Arabic grows does not allow weeds to grow or thrive. If well-tended, a lawn of Arabic grass will remain weed free. Regardless of location, the  secret of a nice looking lawn is maintenance. Keep your lawn well-tended by regular watering, regular fertilization and regular mowing. Do not forget to control of pests, diseases and weeds. Mowing regularly, proper nutrition, watering and pest control enhance the ability of a lawn to out-compete weeds. These practices should be at the top of your mind for a beautiful lawn.

Drought and heat tolerance

The drought tolerance of Arabic grass is low. Under conditions of intense drought, Arabic grass goes dormant. In dry conditions, water your lawn heavily and less frequently. Shallow and more frequent watering encourages shallow rooting and growth of weeds.

Mowing frequency

  • There are many reasons why grass ought to be mowed regularly. The following are some of the reasons.
  • A well mowed lawn is attractive
  • Mowing increases grass density. This in turn control weeds
  • Mowing stresses weeds which weakens them
  • Mowing exposes the lower areas of grass and this prevents pests
  • Mowing improves the lawn function such as recreation and sports
  • Mowing a lawn allows sunshine and light to penetrate to low areas of the grass preventing fungal diseases.

Where Arabic grass should be grown

This type of grass should be grown for all lawns in full or partial shade. It is most suitable for homes, offices and recreation. It is the most sought after grass for luxury lawns in Kenya. As a luxury lawn water must be available to water the grass.

Cold tolerance

Arabic grass can tolerate the cold regions in East Africa it however does not grow well in very high altitudes. In the highlands it grows much more slowly than Kikuyu grass.

Zimbabwe grass

Zimbabwe grass is a popular lawn grass with broad leaves that are light green in color. Unlike paspalum grass, the grass leaves are smooth and slightly curled along the edges. You will identify this grass by long thick stolons that radiate outwards from the main bunch.

Zimbabwe grass in Kenya

Growth habit-This grass is a very aggressive creeper. It produces long thick stolons that rapidly colonize the space available. from these stolons, roots and branches develop. On each node of this grass stolons, two branches will develop. It  forms a dense ground cover and it will be suitable for weed and erosion control.

Shade tolerance-Zimbabwe grass is the only shade tolerant grass that is available in Kenya. This does not mean that it will not grow under full sun. Shade tolerance means that it can grow under shade.

Ability to out-compete weeds-The ability of a grass to out-compete weeds is closely related to its ability to deny weed the following resources,

  • Space for weeds to thrive
  • Light
  • Water and
  • Nutrients

This grass type grows tightly and like Arabic grass it out-competes weeds very successfully

Drought and heat tolerance -Zimbabwe grass has medium tolerance to drought. In the dry seasons, irrigation is required.

Mowing frequency -Mow your lawn regularly to improve appearance and to make it dense. The mowing requirments for Zimbabwe grass are medium.

Where should Zimbabwe grass be grown-Zimbabwe grass should be grown under trees being the only shade tolerant grass that is available in Kenya. Zimbabwe grass can also be grown in full sun and it will form a good lawn. When growing in full sun, regular irrigation will keep the lawn green and lush and will avoid the brownish look of scorched grass.

Cold tolerance-This grass will grow in cold areas. However, the growth rate is slow. As such, this variety of grass will grow best in medium altitudes in East Africa.

Kikuyu carpet grass

Kikuyu grass Pennisetum clandestinum is a very fast growing lawn grass that is common in Kenya. A native grass in Kenya, it has been introduced to many countries in the world.

How does Kikuyu grass look like

This type of grass has dark green leaves that have a blunt apex. The leaves are broad and fold inwards at the midrib. In cold areas, Kikuyu grass forms a dense sod. In warm areas, it hardly forms a dense sod.

Growth habit

This grass has an enhanced lateral growth in cold areas. It spreads by stolons which root as they radiate from the main bunch. The grass also forms dense rhizomes below the ground. The variety available in Kenya is male sterile and is therefore propagated vegetatively. Male sterility means that it does not produce pollen. The lack of pollen is an important attribute where allergies are a concern. Lawn grasses that produce seed heads and pollen ought to be mowed frequently to prevent allergies and unsightly seed heads.

Shade tolerance

In the cold areas, Kikuyu grass has good shade tolerance. I the warm middle and low altitude areas, the grass has very poor shade tolerance. It should therefore be grown in full sun.

Ability to out-compete weeds

A well growing stand of Kikuyu grass will effectively smother out weeds. This is commonly seen in the high altitude areas of Limuru, Lari, Nyandarua n, Kericho and the Mount Kenya region. In the low altitude areas, its ability to out-compete weeds is severely diminished. This is because in the warm areas, the grass grows vertically rather than laterally. This allows gaps on which weeds thrive.

Drought and heat tolerance

Kikuyu grass has medium tolerance to heat and drought. Irrigation is therefore advised in hot and dry areas. Fertilize your lawn properly and allow it to grow densely for it to withstand episodes of drought.

Mowing frequency-Kikuyu grass requires frequent mowing. For sports, this could be as frequent as twice a week. The frequency of mowing increases in the rainy season. Mow your grass lawn frequently to encourage lateral and dense growth. As much as possible do not remove more than one third of the grass height.

Where should Kikuyu grass be grown-Kikuyu grass can be grown for a wide variety of uses. It is mostly suitable in utilities such as road sides, railway line shoulders, public parks and general uses where aesthetics is not a major consideration. This type of grass is also used in golf fairways.

Cold tolerance-Kikuyu grass has excellent cold tolerance. It will grow very well in the very cold regions of East Africa such as Lari, Limuru, Aberdare region, Nyandarua, Kericho, Mau, Iten and the Mount Kenya regions. In these areas, many tropical varieties of grass perform poorly.

Drought and heat tolerance

Like Pemba grass, this grass will tolerate high temperatures. Watering is necessary in the hot areas.

Mowing frequency

Paspalum grass

Paspalum grass has broad and coarse leaves. It has thick rhizomes from which leaves grow. The leaves are dark green in colour and when well established, this grass forms a beautiful lawn.

Growth habit-Paspalum grass grows by bunching. The rhizomes grow laterally producing roots and leaves. Paspalum grass does not produce stolons above the ground

Uses-This grass has a variety of uses. These include recreational lawns, sports pitches and soil erosion. When and for what to use this type of grass depends on the ability of the user to manage water requirements, wear management and other management practices.

Shade tolerance-This type of lawn grass has partial shade tolerance and grows best in full sun. As such, this grass should be planted in areas where there is enough sunlight for most of the day.
